Foundations of Chinese Teaware

The Spring 2025 Semester will run from Monday March 31 through Sunday June 22, 2025.

Wednesdays, 10am-1pm. Join Lilian Wu in an exploration of Chinese tea and teawares in this 12-week course. Students will be introduced to the history of tea and ceramic teawares in China, from the popularization in the Tang Dynasty to the present-day craze of Gongfu Cha. The first class will be taught alongside tea educator Tim Hsu (of Cupidum and Chinatown Soup), who will introduce the foundations of tea, serving, and forms. Students will spend the semester practicing throwing off the hump, and learning how to make teawares such as chawan (tea bowls), cha bei (tea cups), gaiwan (3-piece tea servers), teapots, and drinking tea together. Intermediate/Advanced students only – students must be comfortable throwing basic forms and centering upwards of 3 lbs. This class will be highly structured, and we encourage students to follow the curriculum during class time.

Class meets once a week for 12 weeks. The price of this class is $765 plus tax. Students have access to clay, glaze and open studio time every day from 6 am - 10 pm. Firing fees are 3 cents per cubic inch. Open studio time must be scheduled. Tool kits can be purchased on the first day.
