We are so excited to welcome Yoojee Kwak for a two day handbuilding workshop at our studio. Her forms and technique are wildly inspiring. Yoonjee Kwak is an artist and educator originally from South Korea. She was a long-term resident artist at the Archie Bray Foundation in MT (2017-2019) and Pottery Northwest in WA (2021-2022). She earned her MFA in ceramics from the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York, 2014 and her BFA in ceramics and glass from Hong-Ik University in Seoul, South Korea, 2012. Her work has been showcased in international Ceramic and craft biennials, including those in Icheon, Korea, and more recently, in Chungju, Korea, and Jingdezhen, China. Currently, Yoonjee serves as the Full-time Ceramic Faculty in the Visual Arts Department at the prestigious Loomis Chaffee School in CT.

In this two day hands-on workshop, Yoonjee will do an artist talk and demonstrate the techniques she used for creating her most recent work Where Land Meets See and Unnatural Nature. Students will be learning techniques to make work like what is pictured. Some handbuilding experience required.

Day 1:

  • 11 am: artist presentation / small pieces sales
  • 12-1pm Lunch break
  • 1pm, Demo 1: A small cup with coil bits in solid shape to understand about process (Functional and sculptural)
  • 2pm, Demo 2: Making another cup with perforated texture to start practicing the unique process.
  • (If there is time, I will start Demo 3 this day.)
  • Work time!

Day 2:

  • 9am, Demo 3: Making Mini-Moon jars with the technique we learned on Day 1
  • 10 am: work time
  • 11:30-12:30pm: lunch
  • 12:30pm, Demo 4: Pattern building technique
  • Work time
