Wood firings are a magical thing that (in our humble opinions) everyone who makes ceramics should try at least once. It’s a labor-intensive process that requires multiple days and many participants and creates a real sense of community. Our firing will be hosted by Salem Art Works, located ~4 hours north of NYC and home to a 100-cubic-foot wood kiln.
We want to make this experience available to as many people with regards to cost, time, and labor, so we’re providing 2 participation options. Housing/Meals are separate and can be booked with Salem Art Works.
*This is not a free workshop, to participate, you must purchase one of two options using the following link:
OPTION 1: Full participation
Immerse yourself in the rich tradition of wood-firing. You’ll learn about and participate in loading, directing the flame for specific aesthetic results, and manipulating the kiln temperature by stoking the fire. Because you’ll be participating in the loading process, you can choose where in the kiln to place your pieces for the results you’re looking for.
When: June 1–9, return June 15 for unloading (optional but encouraged!)
Workshop fee: $450
Firing fee: Up to 5 cubic ft. (e.g., 5’x1’x1’ or 1.7’x1.7’x1.7’) guaranteed
plus up to 1 cubic ft. (e.g., 1’x1’x1’x) if space allows
OPTION 2: Split participation
Split the full participation with one other person. It will be up to you how to split your time, including sleeping arrangements, shifts, and kiln space.
When: June 1–9, return June 15 for unloading, split as decided by partners
Workshop fee: $225, split as decided by partners
Firing fee: Up to 5 cubic ft. (e.g., 5’x1’x1’ or 1.7’x1.7’x1.7’), split between partners
